‘In proud and grateful memory of the men and women of Exeter and of Devon who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918 their name liveth for evermore’
[The inscription is around the base of all 4 sides]
This is the City Memorial erected in competition with the County Memorial outside the Cathedral. It is one of the finest Memorials in our opinion since it is a fine work of art and commemorates in addition to a ‘Tommy’, a sailor and much more unusually a nurse and a prisoner of war.
Erected by public subscription it was designed by John Angel. It is surmounted by a figure of Peace (or Victory) holding up a spray of laurels to Heaven. The figure stands on a dragon.
On each of the four arms of the cross is a figure representing a soldier (realistic in great coat with gas mask), a VAD nurse with a bandage, a sailor and a prisoner of war with chains.
It was unveiled by Admiral Beatty in 1923.
