TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY
OF THE 2003 MEMBERS OF THE
ARTISTS RIFLES 28TH BATTALION
THE LONDON REGIMENT. WHO
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING
COUNTRY IN THE GREAT
WAR ANNIS DOMINI 1914-1919
THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE
The Memorial to the Artist Rifles in the Courtyard of the Royal Academy. The Artists Rifles was raised in 1859 as a volunteer unit. It saw active service in the Boer War, WW1 and WW2. It was disbanded in 1945 and then resurrected as the SAS Reserve, which it forms today as 21 SAS (Artists) (Reserve).
This Memorial refers to giving their lives for King and Country, but unlike most other Memorials not to God.
Ref No 6.0 in my list of WW1 War Memorials, looking at what the dedications tell us about how ordinary people felt about the War that had just ended.
